Briefly, it was a good show. I was particularly struck by his lead
guitar playing, last year it seemed he was doing a lot 'noodling' (to
coin another RMD'ers phrase). This year, really good powerful melodic
lead guitar, on acoustic and electric.
The songs:-
1. Gotta Serve Somebody - Really good powerful version, much
better IMHO opener than last years 'Down in the flood'.
2. Man In The Long Black Coat - A personal fave, great to hear
live - good version much more electric/rock than on Oh Mercy. No
harmonica - a great pity - none all night.
3. Cold Irons Bound - Rocking out on this
4. Positively 4th Street - Slow version, melody totally changed not
altogether for the better IMO, seemed to miss the tension in the last
line of each verse.
5. Silvio - Hard rocking again
6. Boots Of Spanish Leather - acoustic (@) and brilliant, but didn't
he start the acoustic set in Glasgow with this last year as well?
7. Masters Of War - @, simple and great really powerfull.
8. Mama, You've Been On My Mind -@ A highlight of the set for me.
9. Tangled Up In Blue - @ More superlatives, it just keeps getting
better, fast exciting energetic, Bob enjoying it.
10. Forever Young - @ a crowd pleaser, not a favorite of mine, crowd
singing along on chorus with various melodies.
11. Desolation Row -@ good, I was really wishing he'd give us a harp
solo but not to be.
12. Highway 61 Revisited - electric, rocking
13. Love Sick - Great powerful version
14. Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 - A crowd pleaser, not so for me, I've
only seen Bob once (in '84) when he didn't play this.
15. Blowing In The Wind - Triumphantly played, crowd loved it, -
not a favorite for me though.
My partner says lots of kneebending, sweating and eyebrow raising on
Bob's part. She also says he looked rather thin.?
The band really good and tight, they compliment Bob really well.
The form seems to be Bob plays first line of a song on guitar, Bob
stops, the band start, then Bob comes in on lead guitar. Does he do
this to set the tempo/mood of the song? Any ideas?
All in all a really good show, happy and energetic as well as subtle
and soulful, his voice in good form, probably better than last year.
