What about the reference in 'Groom's Still Waiting' to the woman 'running a whorehouse in Buenos Aires'? Perhaps Bob sees Argentina as a place of rough; macho violence (gauchos, compadritos, etc.) - an impression which might be confirmed from some of Borges' stories. The tango supposedly originated in those Buenos Aires whorehouses. And wasn't Argentina still under a military dictatorship when the song was written?
